Professional stump grinding in Wellington — stump being reduced below ground level

Say goodbye to unwanted stumps

A leftover stump is more than an eyesore — it can harbour pests, become a tripping hazard, and take up valuable space. Tree Rangers uses professional stump grinding equipment to reduce stumps below ground level, making the area ready for replanting, lawn, or landscaping. We handle stumps of all sizes and in all locations.

Stump grinding

Our grinder reduces the stump to wood chips and mulch, typically 150–300mm below ground level — enough for lawn or garden replanting.

Step 4

Clean-up & fill

Resulting wood chip can be left as mulch or removed. We backfill the hole and leave the area ready for your next landscaping step.

FAQs

What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Stump grinding uses a grinder to shred the stump and surface roots to below ground level. Full stump removal excavates the entire root ball — more disruptive but sometimes needed for certain replanting. Grinding suits most residential situations.

How deep do you grind the stump?

Typically 150–300mm below ground level, which is enough for lawn or garden replanting. If you need deeper grinding for a concrete pour or similar, let us know and we'll adjust accordingly.

Will stump grinding damage my lawn?

There will be some disturbance around the stump area. We minimise this where possible and leave the hole filled with wood chip. Most lawns recover well with some topsoil and seed.

Can you grind stumps in tight spaces?

Yes. We have compact equipment suited for narrow access, walled gardens, and confined spots. Let us know about any access constraints when you enquire.

What Wellingtonians say about us

James Holden is an experienced arborist who has been looking after my Waikanae property for the second year.

I am very impressed with his professionalism and ability to shape trees and hedges.

As a result, my son and daughter as well as my grandson have used his services. They are all very happy with the results

Boyd Klap, Wellington

"We have hired Tree Rangers twice now to cut back and shape some very overgrown trees and have been very happy with their work. James is very knowledgeable and has given us some great advice. His team worked quickly and efficiently, despite the wet conditions both times!"

Nari, Wellington

"James's knowledge of how to properly prune trees is excellent. His first visit a year ago was so well done we asked him to come again this year to maintain some of the previous work, as well as some hedges and trees on a different part of the property. He beautifully shaped and reduced our copper beech, silver birch and maple trees as well as several NZ natives. I highly recommend his work and he is a lovely guy to boot."
