Stump removal Wellington — Grind it down, reclaim your space
Got a stump taking up space in your garden? Tree Rangers offers professional stump grinding and removal across Wellington and surrounding areas. Fast, tidy, and affordable.

Say goodbye to unwanted stumps
A leftover stump is more than an eyesore — it can harbour pests, become a tripping hazard, and take up valuable space. Tree Rangers uses professional stump grinding equipment to reduce stumps below ground level, making the area ready for replanting, lawn, or landscaping. We handle stumps of all sizes and in all locations.

On-site assessment & quote
We assess the stump size, root extent, access, and any underground services nearby before providing a clear, fixed quote.
Safety check
We confirm no underground pipes or cables are in the grind zone before any work begins. Your property and our team stay safe.

Stump grinding
Our grinder reduces the stump to wood chips and mulch, typically 150–300mm below ground level — enough for lawn or garden replanting.
Clean-up & fill
Resulting wood chip can be left as mulch or removed. We backfill the hole and leave the area ready for your next landscaping step.

Why remove that old stump?
Stumps left in the ground attract wood-boring insects and fungal disease that can spread to nearby healthy trees
Grinding is faster and less disruptive than full stump excavation — no heavy machinery tearing up your garden
Reclaim the space for new planting, lawn, or landscaping and improve the look of your property
We grind stumps of all sizes across Wellington, Hutt Valley, Porirua, and the Kapiti Coast
FAQs
Stump grinding uses a grinder to shred the stump and surface roots to below ground level. Full stump removal excavates the entire root ball — more disruptive but sometimes needed for certain replanting. Grinding suits most residential situations.
Typically 150–300mm below ground level, which is enough for lawn or garden replanting. If you need deeper grinding for a concrete pour or similar, let us know and we'll adjust accordingly.
There will be some disturbance around the stump area. We minimise this where possible and leave the hole filled with wood chip. Most lawns recover well with some topsoil and seed.
Yes. We have compact equipment suited for narrow access, walled gardens, and confined spots. Let us know about any access constraints when you enquire.

What Wellingtonians say about us
James Holden is an experienced arborist who has been looking after my Waikanae property for the second year.
I am very impressed with his professionalism and ability to shape trees and hedges.
As a result, my son and daughter as well as my grandson have used his services. They are all very happy with the results
"We have hired Tree Rangers twice now to cut back and shape some very overgrown trees and have been very happy with their work. James is very knowledgeable and has given us some great advice. His team worked quickly and efficiently, despite the wet conditions both times!"
"James's knowledge of how to properly prune trees is excellent. His first visit a year ago was so well done we asked him to come again this year to maintain some of the previous work, as well as some hedges and trees on a different part of the property. He beautifully shaped and reduced our copper beech, silver birch and maple trees as well as several NZ natives. I highly recommend his work and he is a lovely guy to boot."
